Weekend chores

June 25, 2006 · 2 Comments

Or…how not to water one’s foot

Ah, ’tis the weekend and with the weekend comes the usual weekly chores and today I learned how to successfully water a small flower garden without watering myself or the occasional passerby which tends to annoy them to no end.

oops, supper’s ready…please stand by.

Alright, I’m back.

Let’s see…oh yeah! The chores. Mowing as usual, finishing that is. The lawn(s) are basically separated into 3 parts; the front, the back and the “back forty” which doesn’t live up to it’s name being the lawn of a house situated in an urban area but it is on the other side of a hedge from the “back yard” proper and it was the “back forty” that needed doin’ so I did it.

We’ll forget about everything in between so…

The last thing on the list was figuring out how to water the small flower garden that resides out between the the front of the house and the sidewalk which was previously planted and tended by the original family of the previous resident and that duty had now fallen upon us. The tools at my disposal to accomplish this watering task were as follows:

1. A standard hose nozzle for a garden hose.

2. An old style sprinkler that washes a “fan” of water back and forth.

3. The “soaker” hose that I had removed from said garden last year before the cold set in.

I had tried using the nozzle previously and had achieved moderate success even though the screwed-together hoses would only allow me to gain 3 to 4 feet around the front corner of the house (the spigot being all the way around in the back) which did allow me to barely water the far end of garden from 8 feet away and dribble a fair amount of water down my forearm, off the end of my elbow and onto my foot at the same time. Being the proud owner of one pair of sneakers this obviously wasn’t going to work more than 2 or 3 times at the most.

I then tried the old sprinkler which, despite it’s age, worked as if it was just hauled off the shelf of the local hardware store instead of being crammed inside the “hose cubby” attached to the back of the house for who knows how long. After wiping off all the cobwebs and other unmentionables I brought the thing out front along with yet another length of hose figuring that firing the sprinkler up at the current end of the hose(s) would successfully water the neighbor’s dog so another length was most definitely needed. After attaching the new section of hose I screwed on the sprinkler and set it between the house and the garden, walked around to the back of the house to the spigot, gave it a twist and jogged back out to the front to see if anything had exploded. The first thing I noticed was that I had given the spigot a bit more twist than I needed and that I was doing a nice job of watering the sidewalk, the house and one of our cats that happened to be sitting on a shelf on the other side of an open window observing these events completely unaware of the possibility that he might actually become part of the proceedings. A few drops did mange to fall on the garden with each pass but not nearly enough to offset a wet cat so something else had to be tried which was about the time I began to notice that my foot was yet again being watered which abruptly ended the fun and games with a sprinkler rountine.

So now to the soaker hose.

Now I had never used one of these devices before so I when I saw that bright yellow stripe on one side of this very flat black hose my brain immediately came up with the brilliant conclusion that this means the equivalent of “This end up!” and so I did. Actually, I thought I had done a fairly decent job of running this “soaker thingy” in a carefully placed race track patternaround the rectangular shape of the garden and with the yellow stripe running along the length of it, it did kinda’ resemble a little two lane country road running in and around the plants, enough so that I almost expected to see a miniature tractor pulling a tiny manure spreader haul out onto the road from behind one of the petunias.
Now that everything was in place I trotted back to the spigot and gently cracked it open (the cat had returned to the window and I really didn’t want to face the repercussions of wetting him down twice in one afternoon) and went back out front to see what was happening. I squatted down in front of the garden and waiting for the pressure to build in the hose when I noticed the hose was beginning to sprout little thin fountains of water along the length of it which were growing into longer thin fountains of water by the second. It might interest you to know that it takes me a bit longer than a few seconds to get my creaky butt off the ground since my right hip’s recent, wonderful introduction to arthritis so by the time I managed to get to my feet the not so little fountains of water had happily sprinkled me from head to…yup, you guessed it…foot(!) but the garden was finally getting the water it needed.

Anyway…after some minor adjusting and changing of footwear I had the whole shebang up and running along quite nicely. I did find out later that a soaker hose is supposed to be placed yellow stripe down so the little jets of water can “soak” the ground, hence it’s name but the little fountains just look so nice that we just left things the way they were which just makes the neighbors look at us that much more strangely.

I figure that my poor waterlogged sneakers will be dry by next Tuesday.

Rain, quilts and plants yo-ho

June 12, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Seems like the only time I get to post anything these days is during the weekend and that’s usually only one day and one post per blog but that’s ok since I’m only doing this because I can and I enjoy it, not to make deadlines or money for that matter. Just for fun. And so…

The sun went back in shortly after my last post and it’s been more or less pouring rain ever since. Guess I’m kind of used to it now but I still wouldn’t mind some sunshine for a few days. Maybe this week and heck, I might even get to finish mowing the lawn before I start mowing it again if you know what I mean. Besides watching my lawn grow, all this cold and rain makes me hurt too!. When I was in my 20’s and early 30’s it just made me sleepy and hard to get up in the morning but now the disabilities from the service and the after effects of a rather nasty childhood disease (Rheumatic fever) have definitely made themselves known in the form of an aching back, knees and what appears to be some form of rheumatoid arthritis happily ensconced in my right hip that really starts tearing me up toward the end of the work week. Don’t get me wrong…I’m not complaining in the least. Considering a couple of things that happened to me in the past I can consider myself very fortunate to be here in the shape that I’m in or at all for that matter so I’m fairly content with my personal lot at the moment (I’ll never be completely content, I’m just too tenacious and realistic to get that way). Besides, I have a wonderful woman in my life and that’s something I didn’t think possible just a few years ago so what’s to bitch about?

Business has been slow at the quilt shop due to the lousy weather but that does allow Laurie time to sew and quilt and sew and quilt some more and…well, you get the idea. I know she won’t be happy until every square inch of her shop besides the floor is covered with all sizes of quilts and aprons and potholders and wall hangings and…and…and…Again, I’m sure you get the idea. A couple did come in the other day wanting to see the Cobble Mountain Hammock Chairs she sells (and weaves(!) the rope beds that are strung between the wooden hoops… Sheesh! And I thought I was was fairly diverse in my talents!). By my understanding they were quite impressed. They should be. I have one myself and they are the most comfortable things I’ve ever sat in and great for my busted backside if it starts giving me trouble.

Big news (well, for this area anyway). We now have a Price Chopper super market that just opened no more than 5 miles from our house up in Derby which beats the crap out of driving 40 miles or so one way to the one in St. Johnsbury especially since gas has gotten so expensive these days. We’re going to “investigate” this new store after Laurie closes up the shop late this afternoon. For big box super markets, this is our favorite and it has Shaws (also in Derby) beat hands down for prices and product availability. Besides that, we’re just plain frugal and picky as hell when it comes to shopping and prices.

And “Just Because”…

We have a lot of plants around the house. I mean a lot of plants and I do my share of watering said plants so just to satisfy my curiosity I actually counted the number of plants that we have and the grand total came to 103! No wonder the air smells so fresh in the winter when the whole place is buttoned up tight.

That’s enough for now I guess since I haven’t even checked out the news or my mail yet and lunch would be nice to no doubt.

Politicians courting Bloggers

Exploring new territory

So much to blog and so little time…sigh…

Blogging, although not necessarily something that has “been around for quite awhile”, has been around at least 6 or so years now which is just about the right time for the first real beginning of the naturally impending evolution of something new. As long as something new is introduced and hangs around long enough past said new stage (we all should have a pretty good idea now how quickly things move in the world of computers) it has to start evolving or die on the vine. “Adapt or die” as nature tells us…well, I don’t think blogging stands a chance in hell of ever disappearing but what the evolution of a new type of medium eventually turns it into is anybodies guess. But to the point:

Net neutrality was the first thing to come along in this first evolution which is still being hotly battled within the realms of lawmakers of the federal government. Now in addition, politicians apparently realizing that the long standing “closed circle” of Blunderland that the “Bulls and the Bears” and occasional independent have always enjoyed, have become greatly concerned as they see the walls of that “closed cistern…er…circle” fading away as the pressure from the “bloggers of politics” such as the Daily Kos (ie: people in general who care about such things which is grunch load of ‘em) scrape more and more of those walls away. What do they do? What they always do in a case of the people vs politicians…host events(!) and that’s exactly what they have done as you’ll see in the link below.

I’m not going to get into details here since there are too many news sources out there that can illuminate you better than I (here’s one) but I will say that both the Net Neutrality issue and this “courting of bloggers” by the politicos is the beginning of the process that will determine the entire future of how the WWW will operate and if it will remain in control of the people at large as one big happy anarchy or broken up into various tiers of access controlled by big business and whatever government that decides to stick it’s 2 cents worth in . Follow this very closely folks. Our whole (cyber) world is going to end up hanging in the balance.

Sun came out

June 5, 2006 · Leave a Comment

The sun came out for a short time today which was very appreciated since  it’s been continually  raining here (yet again) for the last week or so.  The foliage is loving it though. I really don’t think I’ve ever seen the greenery so thick and heavy in all my life and it becomes a mad rush just to get the lawn done when the sun actually does come out long enough to dry it and I still end up scrapping compressed grass clippings off the bottom of the mowing deck. I even heard a couple of mowers going yesterday in the middle of the rain. Guess they just couldn’t wait.

Other news…Kenny and I finally got Laurie’s “Long Meadow Farms” sign up and properly mounted at the shop and I’ll have to get a few pictures of it after she gets through painting the mounting  brackets the same color as the part of the sign they cover. That way the brackets won’t stand out. It’s about time since the sign maker never was able to deliver the proper mounting brackets (wasn’t his fault) so we made do with what our local hardware store had to offer.

Anyway, the cats are crazy as usual and it’s not even a full moon yet. Church managed to claw his way through the caning on the back of a real nice chair and pulled the end of a scarf that was hanging on the back of the chair through said hole. Kitty burgers anyone?

Alright, I’m going out side for awhile just to see where the sun went. My aching body has been loudly complaining about the lack of sunny, dry days so maybe a little sun dance will help. Hope the neighbors don’t mind.

Windows One Care Live

June 4, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I came across an article this morning on the Mercury News website about the new so called “automatic” internet security suites coming out such MS’s One Care Live service and Symantec’s future Norton 360 etc etc. I like the analogy the author uses at the beginning of the article:

You’d sign up with World’s Worst Burglar Alarm Service and get sent a box filled with door and window sensors, along with wires and a lengthy instruction manual. You’d have to install the system yourself.

When you were away from home and the alarm was tripped, World’s Worst would deliver a recorded phone message: “Should we ignore this event or call the police?” If you didn’t answer, nothing would happen.

I agree with most of the article especially the part about waiting awhile before trying out a new service that digs right down into the “deep darks” of your operating system in order to get the job done. This is the kind of software that you do not want to install when it’s new and possibly full of bugs however, despite the fact that installing your own “out of the box” security suite may be a hassle for the non-technical there are a few easily installed, extremely effective security suites out there that keep the hassle to a minimum. One of them (the one I use and found to be the most effective overall) is Panda’s Internet Security 2006 which I upgraded to from the 2005 version I previously ran. Although it may not be quite as “simple” as One Care Live over all, the installation is easy and basically non-technical and once past the initial setting up of automatic updates and registering (clue: Read the manual. It’s not that hard), the user can generally forget it’s there until they might have to acknowledge an “I’m updated” or a blocked intrusion alert. And if you think an alert or two while while on-line might get annoying, One Care Live has it’s own share of redundant alerts by what I’ve read. Quite a few more in fact but that seems to be the only real complaint besides that One Care doesn’t include email spam protection which Panda does.

I’m only using Panda as an example. It might be a little more costly at first but renewing yearly services (which has so far included the newest version of the suite at no charge) has been in my experience, considerably less than the initial purchase.

The bottom line is think twice before trying something new that’s going to live in the guts of your system like these products are required to and if you currently have an Internet Security suite and you’re happy with it and it works(!) then there really is no no reason to change.

Strange bedfellows and general complaints

June 3, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Everyone seems to want to crawl into bed with every one else these last several weeks. I haven’t had this much fun since I rode the crest of the wave of the budding PC and (then) WWW.

First it was BootCamp: Windows on a MAC?

Then (in no specific order):

Google going on an MS style buying spree giving us things like Blogger, Sketch-up, The future Google Write and things of that nature.

Google and Dell. I don’t see where this is going yet but time will tell.

Google loses with Amazon A9 search when MS’s Windows live search takes over. Personally, I like the Amazon search engine better now.

Yahoo strikes content deal with E-Bay. Couldn’t care less. I don’t do E-Bay but what does this mean for the masses who do? Future topic perhaps and…

Rumor: Microsoft wants to buy/acquire/whatever E-bay and move the entire thing to it’s MSN portal. Things have been awful quiet about this since it first showed up on Google news. MS, E-Bay and Yahoo? Great googily-moogily!

And squabbles galore! The latest being Adobe miffed at MS for allowing a free download for the upcoming Office 2007 suite of a module that allows the user to save a document as a .pdf. Adobe has demanded that MS charge it’s customers for the privilege of use even though the same ability is offered (free of charge) in just about every other Office style suite in existence including Open Office. Let’s just add another EU lawsuit to MS’s list of things to do this year.

Speaking of which…I’ve got just one thing to say to Symantec; I wouldn’t touch Your internet security and anti virus products with a ten foot pole. I stopped using you’re products with the demise of DOS. Why?(unprofessional statement alert) Because they suck! Norton Antivirus is so full of holes it’s like trying to catch water in a sieve and it’s the biggest resource hog of all this type of software available. I have either read about, heard about or have personal experience with PC’s that have been infected with a virus/worm/trojan/spyware that got through Norton’s Anti virus/Internet security suites and just about every company I’ve worked for that used Symantec’s enterprise offerings have been infected on a regular basis and you have the balls to get on Microsoft’s case? And please don’t lecture me on a user’s surfing habits. Safe surfing or not you can still get caught out and the innocent and naive user is sometimes the most vulnerable simply due to their ignorance. The ones who surf on the “wrong side of the tracks” have the on line security to protect them and it ain’t Symantec/Norton.

Okay “nuff” said.
