Beep Beep Boop

Testing out the new wordpress.com post editor after reading some of the comments on it here and there on WWW and I do have to admit the “beep beep boop” loading logo is rather silly and to be honest about it, rather childish as well. However, the initial load time of this new editor was less than 3 seconds contrary to what has been said by indicated by various wordpress.com users.

I also included an image since folks were complaining about the new way images were inserted and edited. So far I see nothing different about image insertion and/or editing that I have seen in the self hosted version of WordPress (currently at 4.1.1) that powers my old site.

demotivation-apple-duo core I’ve already saved a few drafts and the time from clicking on the “Save Draft” button at the bottom of the editor and the time for the editor to be ready again was less than 3 seconds so overall I see no real difference between the speed of the “classic editor” vs the new fangled one. Otherwise, I can see where the interface of the new editor has been “streamlined” I’d guess they’d call it? I’m sure others might say it was dumbed down as well. For myself, the jury is still out since I do all my “blogging” to my 9 year old self hosted WordPress powered blog which still retains the “classic” version of the editor. I can’t say I dislike the new interface though. On first use it’s strangely appealing but maybe I’m just getting older and prefer things to be more simple and less distracting/complicated than they use to be.

Either way, the “beep beep boop” has definitely got to go. Unless the WordPress devs have suddenly developed a craving to cater to 12 year olds. 😉

Just Thinkin has moved.

So it’s been WordPress.com and 130 posts or so and now it’s time to move into my own WordPress install. Kinda’ like moving from an apartment into your first home which means all the problems of ownership (except at the server end of things) are now mine but on the other hand…I can fix them as well.

It also makes me free to mess things up as I see fit thus giving me badly needed training on what not to do when configuring my own blog site and for any readers I might have, a whole lot of laughs.

So for awhile I’ll put the first part of a new post here with a link to the new site and after the new site’s rank is back up I’ll stop doing that as well. This post will always be at the top.

Meanwhile, here’s the link to the new home of “Just Thinkin”:

http://just-thinkin.net

All past post have already been transferred over but like in any move some things get left behind and as such, all the previous comments seem to have evaporated into thin virtual air. Such is life. Plenty of time for more comments on this, that, and the other thing.

Many thanks to WordPress.com for hosting this small portion of my life.

See ya’ at the new site.

Long Meadow Farms website is moving!

Once again, it’s moving time but instead of moving the whole household across town like we did last year or her quilting business into an honest to goodness storefront in town this year, this time it’s her long standing www.longmeadowfarms.com website to a new host (BlueHost). Although this move may not involve a whole lot of back breaking labor, it does involve a whole lot of trepidation. This venerable website has been around for nearly ten years now (which is akin to saying the house we live in has been around for nearly 100 years now) and thrived for several years, been lost, got found, resuscitated and is well on it’s way up the ranks once again so it may be understandable why I feel like we’re handling some very fragile collectible that you definitely don’t want to drop. That’s me of course. I’m sure my honey thinks it’s just another walk in the park. After all, it’s not the first time it’s been moved but hopefully it’s the last.

Rearranging and trackbacks

For anyone who happens to stop by the blog and wonders why the looks have changed and changed again…I’m just rearranging the blog a bit.

I started out this AM looking for a theme that gave anyone who wanted a trackback url, could find it easily such as above the comments field or above the actual post. Alas, it was to no avail. For one, I don’t know diddly about trackbacks except that it’s a way for bloggers to mention other blog articles in their post and let that particular blogger know that he/she is posting about their blog. I also know that WordPress.com is supposed to scan my posts for links to blog articles and attempt to notify the owner (???).

Then I went spelunking about looking at other blogs and if they did indeed have a trackback url handy and guess what?

Most didn’t.

So my trusted “Andreas04” theme wins out against the mighty forces of WordPress.com’s offerings once again.

Now the problem that I have found in being a “blogger” is that I enjoy writing much better than keeping my blog site tidy and informative, for example:

  • I’m way behind on adding links to the “Sites” category in the sidebar or arranging the sidebars to a more convenient layout to begin with. Something I should have done shortly after I first started.
  • Start reading and finding out about the “how to’s” and “what’s this do?” and “how do I to this?” and all the options and things available that WordPress.com offers to one of their many bloggers ie: Maybe I should know what I’m doing?
  • Okay, that’s enough. There’s plenty more but let’s start there.

So I’m going to be arranging the sidebars more to my liking. If things tend to look a bit funky and broken, I’ll get things straightened out eventually.

I hope. :b

Poor Robert

I was banging around in my WordPress.com admin page trying my best to screw up the looks of my (little known) “Back Woods Tech” blog which I managed with more or less success. I think.

Well, the blog does look different now anyhow.

Can one be pleased by failing to screw something up intentionally?

Anyway, as I was failing to screw up, I happened to notice in the Top Posts column of WordPress’s front page, a post by Robert Scoble (Scobleizer) concerning Windows Live Spaces and the blogs incorporated therein. I had to chuckle not only at the fact that Robert had found, or not found depending on how you look at it, the same type of content (or lack thereof), that I did when I recently wandered over to have a look around Spaces myself last week, but at the comments as well.

Poor Robert was bashed, harangued and rather badly hammered about his “egotistical” critique of WLS and the problem was that I agreed with him. So I’m egotistical as well? I don’t think so.

Heck, I’m still new when it comes to blogging (but very little else mind you), I freely admit my guilt. I’m still trying to get a handle on Pings and Trackbacks for cryin’ out loud. But while new at blogging , I am most certainly not new as far as the Internet, computers and research are concerned. I began my career back in the seventies, years before the first Sony Walkmen even hit the streets, let alone a PC.

Where was I? Oh yeah…

“Scobleizer” for example, has a Google rating of 7 out of 10 and as screwed up as Google ratings can be at times, that kind of rating still means you have to work for it. On the other hand, my little “Back Woods Tech” blog has no rating at all and that’s just fine with me. I’m doing this strictly for fun and the experience of actually trying something new.

So look…about half of his posted “Fifty” had no entries at all and one of them actually stated that “This blog is intentionally left blank”. So these individuals are maybe making a statement here or something? Bah.

Putting up a blog and doing absolutely nothing with it is just taking up a piece of blog space that someone else might use for some actual content…even if it’s only a few pictures in hopes that Grandma might get to see them. Also, I can probably forgive “…intentionally left blank” now that I think about it. The person behind that one most likely is making a statement although one we will probably never understand.

Hmmm. In that case, could “…intentionally left blank” be considered art?

What’s my point you ask? No point, I answer. I’m just stating the fact that I read a blog called “Scobleizer” (So I like his blog…so do a lot of folks) and how I reacted to one of his posts and following comments.

I don’t always have to have a point…

It’s my blog, isn’t it?

4 out of 10?

OK, now here’s a weird one.

I happened to have the Google Toolbar sitting on top of my browser when I banged into “Just Thinkin” during my usual weekend morning “surf around” and I noticed that the blog was ranked 4 out of 10 on the site rank meter. Excuse me?

I’m not to sure why I have this rating all of a sudden (not complaining though) since I blog only for fun. And I actually haven’t been able to keep up with it due to recent health problems but hey…many thanks to those out there who actually read this stuff.

Meanwhile, I need to finish up my chores and head over to Long Meadow Farms quilt shop to take photos (for her website) of the latest quilts and stained glass items that have come out of my honey’s workshop, some of which I hope to post here in the very near future.

I really do need to get a tripod for the camera though. I shoot with the flash on and then with it off. Things tend to get shaky with the longer exposure time when the flash is off or perhaps I’m not as steady as I used to be hmmm?).

till next time…
